Fulfill badge requirements by attending our workshop-style programs. Typically, programs are scheduled for school holidays/breaks and weekends.

A minimum of eight scouts is required for each workshop to avoid the program’s cancellation and a maximum of 30 scouts is accepted to ensure a quality experience. Register early to save a spot for your den by calling (815) 723-5201, ext. 235.

Tiger Level

Prairie Pioneers
Saturday, January 29, 2011 , 1:30-3:30 p.m.
What? No Wii! No cars? No grocery stores?!? This program gives students a glimpse of life on the prairie in 1832, the year Charles Reed built his cabin on the land that would become Joliet . Students learn about housing, transportation, clothing and chores of yesteryear through hands-on activities and games. Students make and taste homemade butter. This program also includes an abbreviated tour of the Museum’s main gallery. While this program is a favorite of Tiger Scout leaders, other levels use this program to fulfill their “Visit An Historic Site” requirement. Registration and payment is due the Monday, January 24. Bear Level

The Joliet Loop : Architecture and Monument Walk through Downtown Joliet
Wednesday, March 30, 2011 , 10:00 a.m. - Noon
How much do you really know about downtown Joliet ? We’ll start at the Museum and take an architecture walk through the downtown “loop” where we’ll learn about the history of Joliet through the buildings of past and present Joliet . We’ll find the outline of the third Will County Courthouse and look at the monuments on the Courthouse Square . Scouts will complete an architecture/history hunt during the walk. A waiver signed by parents is required for this program and will be sent to leaders along with confirmation information. This session fulfills Achievement 3: What Makes America Special? and Requirement 3d~Find out where places of historical interest are located in or near your town or city. The cost of this program is $6 per scout. Registration and payment is due by Wednesday, March 23, and can be made by calling 815.723.5201, ext. 235.

Boy Scouts

Indian Lore Merit Badge Workshop
Monday, March 28, 2010 , 1:00-4:00 p.m. (Registration due Monday, March 21)
This lesson is designed to help Boy Scouts earn their Indian Lore Merit Badge. Scouts will engage in a variety of activities, under the leadership of a certified merit badge counselor, to learn about the Potawatomi and their way of life. By the end of the program, the scouts will be able to describe how the Potawatomi lived in the early 1800s and where they live today. Scouts will also make a wig wam and a beaded bracelet, play traditional Native American games, and learn at least 25 signs from Native American sign language. Please bring your blue card to be filled out by the counselor at the end of the class. The cost of this program is $9 per scout.

Midnight at the Museum
Friday, April 8-9, 2011, 6:30 p.m.-8:00 a.m. (Registration due by Friday, February 5, 2011)
Bring your den to the Museum for an overnight they won’t forget. We’ll play games, spend time in the Museum’s permanent and special exhibition galleries, and more. An evening snack and continental breakfast are provided. Advance registration and paperwork is required, including a participation waiver. A 25% non-refundable deposit is required at registration with the balance due 4 weeks before the program. A maximum of 80 scouts will be accepted for each overnight date. The cost of this program is $19 per scout and $13 per adult. A Midnight at the Museum patch is available for an additional $2 per person. Free Admission Day

When you run the dishwasher or grab a shopping bag, do you ever wonder who imagined those gizmos? Learn about several inventors and the contraptions that they dreamed up to make our lives easier. The Museum’s Resource and Discovery Room will be full of free crafts and activities for all ages, sponsored by Midwest Generation. Come invent a gadget!

How Do I Plan A Visit to the Museum?
Register Early
Scout programs, especially Midnight at the Museum, fill quickly so register early to reserve space for your den. If your den is not able to attend a workshop session, but you would still like to have your scouts work on that badge, you can still schedule a program for your scouts for school holidays/days off. Weekend dates are also a possibility, depending upon staff availability. Please consult your school calendar when scheduling workshops/programs so that you are aware of holiday weekends, etc.

Program Fees
Please check the workshop descriptions for program fees and length. Siblings five and older can participate in workshops and special events and will be charged the noted admission fee.

Minimums/Maximums
Each workshop has a minimum of eight and a maximum of 30 participants. If you cannot attend a workshop and are scheduling an individual class for your den, a minimum of eight participants is required for each program. If you do not have the minimum required in your den, consider pairing with a brother den/troop or inviting siblings to participate. If you do not have eight participants, you can still schedule a program, you will simply be charged for the minimum number of scouts required for programming.

Program Deposit and Cancellation Policy
If you are registering for a workshop or a special event, payment is due by the registration date for each workshop/special event. If you are scheduling an individual class, a $10 deposit, due upon receipt of your confirmation notice, is required to hold the date/time of your program. If the deposit is not received by the date on your confirmation notice, you will lose your desired date/time. The deposit can be applied to the cost of your program or refunded the day of your program. You will lose your deposit if you must cancel and do not do so at least one week prior to your program.

Special Needs
The Museum is handicap accessible. When scheduling a program, please let us know if you have any patrons with special needs so that appropriate accommodations can be arranged.

Arrivals/Departures
Please arrive at the designated time for your workshop or special event. If you need directions, there is information, including a map showing parking, on the museum’s website, www.jolietmuseum.org.

Parking
Parking is available in the Museum parking lot at the corner of Ottawa and Webster Streets.

Gift Shop
Scouts can visit the Museum Gift Shop as long as they are supervised by an adult.

Patches
A Museum patch can be purchased for $1 per scout/leader. Please specify the number of patches you will need when you schedule your program. Siblings can purchase a patch in the Gift Shop, if desired.
