Ways to Give

Cash, Check or Credit Card
Simplicity and ease of delivery are the major factors that make cash (in the form of a check) the most popular type of gift to the Museum. Checks should be made payable to the Joliet Area Historical Museum and mailed to:

Matching Gifts
Several companies throughout the area will match gifts made by employees or retirees. The Museum’s development office has a list of matching companies available.

Memorials and Honorariums
Memorials and honorariums may be created to honor or memorialize a friend, family member or to commemorate a special occasion. When you make a gift in memory of a person, the Museum will send a simple card to the family, letting them know that you’ve made a gift.

Bequests
A variety of items may be gifted to the Museum through your will.

The most common planned gift to the Museum is the will bequest. Charitable gifts made by will are 100% tax deductible. As with current gifts, bequests may be designated either as unrestricted, giving the Museum the most flexibility, or restricted; that is, designated for a specific purpose.

Life Insurance
Naming the Joliet Area Historical Museum as beneficiary of a life insuran ce policy is a great way to leave a legacy at the Museum . If you own a paid-up policy you no longer nee d , you can transfer beneficiary status to the Joliet Area Historical Museum or you may purchase a new policy and name the Museum as your beneficiary. Contact your life insurance company for appropriate forms.

Retirement Plans
The Museum can be named beneficiary of your 401(k), IRAs and other retirement accounts. Th ese accounts are often the most tax-burdening assets because undistributed assets remainin g in these accounts are subject to both income and estate taxes if the beneficiary is not your spouse .

It’s easy to change your beneficiary designation. P lease contact your retirement plan advisor or administrator to make the appropriate designation.

Gifts of Securities
The Museum accepts gifts of mutual funds, closely held securities and publicly traded securities. Securities are a great way to give a gift and avoid paying capital gains taxes.

Please contact the Museum about the transfer of securities and instruct your broker to contacts the Museum for needed information prior to the transfer.

Gifts of Real Estate
Gifts of real estate may include developed property and undeveloped property or gifts subject to a prior life interest. Prior to acceptance of real estate, the Museum shall require an initial environmental review of the property to ensure that the property has no environmental damage.

Gifts-in-Kind
In-kind gifts are non-monetary donations that assist the Museum in fulfilling its mission. Please contact the Executive Director, 815-723-5201 ext. 236 for the Museum’s current needs.
