
Volunteer of the Year Named At Joliet Area Historical Museum
The Joliet Area Historical Museum, 204 N. Ottawa Street in downtown Joliet, is pleased to announce that Museum volunteer Mimi Vercellotti has been named Volunteer of the Year.
The announcement was made at the Museum’s annual meeting in July. Museum volunteers are nominated for this award based on their service to the Museum and their commitment to forwarding the Museum’s mission of promoting awareness, understanding and preservation of the Joliet area’s diverse history.

Essay Contest for All Will County Eighth Graders
Joliet—Each May, the National Trust for Historic Preservation encourages communities throughout the United States to celebrate National Preservation Month. This year’s theme is “Making Preservation Work!”
The Joliet Area Historical Museum, Joliet Historic Preservation Commission, Will County Historic Preservation Commission and Will County Historical Society have partnered to foster local awareness of Preservation Month. In addition to offering a half-day program at the Museum on May 5, Making Preservation Work! Partnerships + Preservation = Progress, the committee is sponsoring an essay contest, open to all Will County eighth grade students.

Walt Keener was Museum Curator and Historian
Joliet —The Board of Directors and employees of the Joliet Area Historical Museum (JAHM) mourn the loss of Curator Walter J. Keener, Jr., 54, who died suddenly on Friday, December 29. Keener, a resident of Joliet, had been Curator since January, 2002.

Museum Offers Free Admission in Honor of International Museum Day
Joliet—On Saturday, May 20, 2006, the Joliet Area Historical Museum celebrates International Museum Day by offering free admission to all visitors. During this free day, sponsored by Midwest Generation Joliet Station, the Museum will offer circus-themed activities and crafts, including face painting, a balance beam challenge, a “ring of fire” for children to jump through, and novelty photo opportunities.

Dr. Sterling Named Volunteer of the Year by the Illinois Association of Museums
Dr. Robert E. Sterling, Director of Distance Education and Retired Chair of the History Department at Joliet Junior College, was named Volunteer of the Year by the Illinois Association of Museums during the annual IAM Awards Banquet at the historic Hotel Baker in St. Charles, Illinois on October 14th.

Joliet Area Historical Museum Announces Completion of Route 66 Mural
During the week of July 5, the Joliet Area Historical Museum became a working art gallery as the Museum, in collaboration with Friends of Community Public Art, sponsored a mural workshop for children ages 5 1/2-9 years old.

Museum Awarded SBC Excelerator Grant
The Joliet Area Historical Museum has received a $5,000 grant from the 2003 Excelerator competitive technology grants program of the SBC Foundation. The grant will support the Museum's "Collection Documentation and Access Improvement Project." The project enables the Museum to begin to put its collections information on a computer database which can be accessed by Museum visitors and through special mini-virtual exhibits created for the Museum's website.
